#THROWBACKTHURSDAY [5.17.2012]

The debut event, kicking off the #ThroughTheMic event series, takes place tonight at LACMA, so we thought it was appropriate to feature a video from the series co-curator MURS today. This video, which features 9th Wonder, is for the song “I Used to Love Her (Again).”

RIP Donna Summer (1948 – 2012)

Donna Summer, the queen of disco, lost her battle with cancer and passed this morning. The disco legend is known for hit songs, such as “Last Dance,” “Hot Stuff,” “She Works Hard for the Money,” “I Feel Love” and “Love to Love You Baby.”  Summer is a five time Grammy award winner and was also nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 63-year-old was planning to release another album this year and kept her illness private.

Six Reasons – “Michael Myers”

West Coast rapper Six Reasons dropped the single “Michael Myers” from his upcoming mixtape 80s Baby, as well as a behind-the-bars video showing the creative process involved in making the song.

The song recently debuted on Power 106 LA’s “New at 2” and also topped Bakersfield radio station Hot 94.1’s countdown six nights in a row, beating out new tracks from Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown, Cee-Lo, Brandy and ASAP Rocky.

Six Reasons has built an impressive independent following and has earned a number of endorsements from heavy hitters including 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, Too $hort and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

#RESPECTHEWESTWEDNESDAYS [5.16.12]

We usually share videos on #RespectTheWestWednesdays but today, we’re switching it up a bit and highlight an artist who is cool with a number of Cashmere team members, Mykestro. Mykestro is a superb lyricist from Los Angeles and has worked with many of your favorite West Coast emcees ranging from Xzibit to Kendrick Lamar.

Mykestro dropped a double album, The Barmittzpha, in unique way. Disc 1 (The Ceremonial) is for sale on iTunes, while Disc 2 (The Chair Dance Celebration) is available as a free Download.

Guest appearances, include Xzibit, Kendrick Lamar, Daz Dillinger, Soopafly, Ab-Soul and more. Producers on the album, include DJ Battlecat, Nottz, THX, Like (Pac Div), Willie B. and more. Check it out.

#LACMAThroughtheMic : THIS THURSDAY

Come join us this Thursday (5/17) for the launch of Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art’s (LACMA) first hip-hop concert series, Through The Mic. In collaboration with Cashmere Agency and Guerilla Union, the one-of-a-kind series will explore contemporary, Los Angeles hip-hop music from May through October 2012. Co-curated by LACMA and hip-hop artist Murs, Through The Mic will take place the third Thursday of every month and will feature emerging and experimental L.A.-based hip-hop artists.

The kick-off event will host a special performance by 3MG: Murs, Eligh and Scarub, formerly known as 3 Melancholy Gypsys. The series continues on June 21, with a performance by Dumbfoundead with Medusa and Gizzle.

Tickets are $15, general admission and $10 for LACMA members. For more information and to reserve tickets visit www.lacma.org/event/3mg.
