While it seems a bit expensive, shelling out $49 for only two hours of class, it will benefit you in the long run.  You won’t have to pay another person to help patch your jeans or buy a pair of earrings you could have made yourself!

We Wanna Poken!

February 3rd, 2010

Picture 4

The evolution of business card collecting:

  1. The primitive rubber band approach of tying all of your paper contacts together and shoving them into your wallet, purse or desk.
  2. The more functional, but still bulky and uncomfortable Rolodex system.
  3. The more secure Apple Address Book, but still requiring one to manually type in data in order to store in an organized manner.

With iPads, iPods, iPhones, Blackberrys and other software running our lives, we can’t still be required to “manually” input or be accountable for a paper trail any more can we?

Enter Poken: the world’s first social business card.  It’s cute, it’s functional and these guys are onto something.

The idea of Poken is simple: a Poken is a small device able to fit on your key chain with a built in USB device which stores your information digitally – everything from your address to your phone number to your social networking information. You can choose what your Poken stores and what information you want to share with others. When you want to exchange information with someone, all you have to do is touch your Poken to your contact’s Poken and the devices digitally transfer your information to each other instantly (which is called a “High 4” in Poken Talk).  Once home, you can plug in your Poken USB into your computer, click, save and organize all your contacts within minutes!!  The Poken software easily syncs up with Outlook or Apple Mail.

But what happens if you don’t remember the name of the person you Poken’d with?  No problem…Poken stores your information both chronologically and alphabetically, making it easy for you to go back and find important contacts whether it be by name, date, title or order of importance.

And the best part about Poken is the amazingly eye-pleasing designs of the device.  You can choose a simple, more traditional black pokenPULSE ($34.95) with 2GB on-board flash memory, tons of storage between uploads, and easily updatable firmware. Or you can jazz up your Poken by purchasing the pokenSPARK ($19.95), which comes in Ninja, Tiger, Cat, Frog and other characters. They even have a limited edition Barack Obama Poken…seriously.

Believing the Lost Hype

February 2nd, 2010

Lost

Go on, admit it. Even if you’re one of the few who’ve never watched an episode of Lost, you know someone who has…And you’ve got to be a little bit curious to find out how the last season of the six year-old series is going to end. After waiting a long seven months, the very popular television show is kicking off its final season tonight at 9pm on ABC. With the demise of The Wire two years ago, it would be hard to deny that the best show on television now stars Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Ben, and Locke.

Long time Lost fans are amped to what the series creators have in store for this final season.  Not to mention, how many (if any) of the series’ plot lines will actually be resolved….What happened after Juliet set off that nuclear bomb? Is Locke really dead? Who is Jacob and what’s relationship with the man in Black? Will Sun and Jin ever reunite? What is the origin of the island? Why has the island brought everyone to it?  For those needing a refresher, here’s the promo for tonight’s episode.

Also, be sure to check out the video below which captures a play-by-play of Oceanic flight 815’s crash

Last Saturday marked the opening of famed artist Michael Roman’s solo exhibition right in the heart of Los Angeles.  Curated by Edgar Varela of EVFA at Urban:Sanctuary (2026 E. 1st street LA 90033) located in Boyle Heights, Roman’s solo show displays various printing methods on textile, wood, terracotta, and paper by using his imaginative mixture of both nostalgic symbols from his cultural upbringing with images inspired by his present day.  Showcasing the past and present art from Roman, the exhibition will be on display for the entire month of February.  For more information please visit http://www.urbansanctuaryla.com

About the Artist

Born and raised in greater Los Angeles, Michael Roman moved to New York’s lower east side in the mid-70’s. Working as an aspiring artist / bike messenger, Michael frequently delivered packages and hung out at Andy Warhol’s labs in Manhattan. There, he received a great deal of inspiration to what would become his life work of stencil / screen art, combining Warhol techniques with old-Mexico methods and ancient images, which has become known as “Latinissmo”.

Michael’s textile art, known for its all over coverage and hand made appearance brings life to stencils and images. Avoiding the sterilized look, which is so common, the hand wrought artwork appears as unique and imperfect as life itself.

Michael’s clients have included celebrities such as Carlos Santana, Madonna, and Keith Richards. His artwork has been chosen to adorn album covers, Hotel VIP rooms, movie sets, night clubs, and dozens of restaurants.

In the mid-90’s, Michael was discovered by Carlos Santana, and he moved to San Francisco where he has been making personal artwork, clothing, and furniture for the superstar. Michael participates in several international events and has a permanent display at the Oaxaca Heritage Museum in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Michael currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Mission Cultural Center in San Francisco, where also teaches classes to aspiring and students in the Mission district.

Calling all meat eaters!  The words “raw” and “vegan” to describe food may scare you off as you are used to your steaks, chicken salads and pork belly sandwiches.  Step outside of your comfort zone and try Sunpower Natural Organic Restaurant (www.sunpowernatural.com) located in Studio City.  They’ve found a way to make delicious raw, vegan and organic food that does not taste as bad as it sounds.  In fact, the raw supreme pizza with kale salad ($10) on the side is mouth-watering goodness.  The kale shake ($8) tastes like pistachio heaven and the butter pecan cheezcake ($8) makes us salivate just from reading it.  Not only do they have great food, they have great service and most importantly, great prices!!  You don’t have to break your piggy bank to eat healthy at Sunpower Natural Organic Restaurant.  Don’t be scared, it’s worth the experience!
