Art Anyone? Kelvin Visits the Hammer
March 13th, 2008Recently I visited the Hammer Museum in Westwood to see Kara Walker’s exhibition titled “My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love.” Walker works mainly in the disregarded art form of silhouette paper cutting and arranges these giant, full-walled, narrative murals that address issues of race, slavery, sexual exploitation, discrimination and reverse discrimination all filled with an air of sarcasm and subtle humor. It’s pretty heavy-handed work but it’s definitely worth a view if you get the chance. One of the coolest parts of the show is the cell-phone audio guided tour which lets you call a number from your cell and hear the artist personally speak about her work through a automated system.
