Cashmere Kicks: Vans x MLB Opening Day Collection

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

In a collaboration with Major League Baseball, Vans is putting out a series of MLB-team inspired footwear. The Chukka LX’s, in particular, are one of the more stylish models coming from Vans, so these collabos are already winners by default.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s Chukkas feature a nice seasonal cream colored upper made of leather, accented with red piping, topping off the classic white sole. Of course, the team logo sits comfortably on the outside heel. Oh yeah, and each pair of the 12 Authentic LX shoes will come along with a matching limited edition Majestic Authentic Jersey.

These will be available on Monday, April 5th at 11am at Proper in Long Beach. Other teams’ collaborations will be available in their respective cities so be on the look out for those. Already announced are: the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Washington Nationals.

Cashmere Event Recap: Jay-Z hits L.A.

Monday, March 29th, 2010

On Friday night, some of the Cashmere ladies had the chance to catch Trey Songz, Young Jeezy and Jay-Z in concert,  live at the sold out Staples Center.

Stopping in L.A. for his BP3 Tour, Jay-Z put together a great show that was also highlighted by his opening act performers. First up, R&B crooner Trey Songz kicked off the night’s festivities with an impressive set, performing a number of his hit ballads. To our surprise, Jay-Z came out second, running through new material from his latest LP. Hov’s set was interrupted by Young Jeezy bringing some of that down south swag to the West Coast audience. Jay-Z finished up the night with a mash-up of all the Hova hits from “Can I Get A…” to “Big Pimpin’”.

Memphis Bleek, Alicia Keys’ boo Swizz Beats and the West Coast don Ice  Cube made surprise appearances on stage. In the crowd, the Cashmere crew noticed the concert was heavily attended by celebs  with the  likes of Pete Wentz, Ashlee Simpson, and Chris Rock.

If you missed it, Cashmere feels sorry for you. But check out some flicks below from last Friday’s event and feel like you were (sorta) there.

Cashmere Event Recap: Long Beach Step Show 2010

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

“Step N2 the Beach” Long Beach Step Show was an event like no other and Cashmere feels sorry for all those who missed it. This past weekend, the annual Step Show celebrated its 20th anniversary show as African-American fraternities and sororities brought their A-game to be crowned the Kings and Queens of the biggest Step Show competition on the West Coast.

Dating back to over a century ago, the “Divine 9” –the nine predominant African-American Greek organizations– include fraternities Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta,  Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma and sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta.

All nine took the stage in their respective colors, performing in their various themed routines. Some used props, while some teams’ props were actually little people, or more precise, young ladies who emulated the hard stepping routines associated with the specific sororities they were representing. The ‘Q’s’, all of them it appeared, wowed the crowd with a raucous display of camaraderie, while the ladies of the Alpha Kappa Alpha paid tribute to Barbie during their set.

However, at the end of the night, it was the brothers from the Alpha Phi Alpha and the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta that stood tall. Congrats to both houses.

Sponsored by Warner Bros. Pictures Clash of the Titans, “Kraken” themes were found throughout the entire Pyramid. From t-shirts and beach balls to banners and posters, we’re sure that the Black College Greek Community will continue in full enthusiasm when the action flick hits theaters April 2nd. We hope you are TOO!

Check out the videos below of the highlights from the Long Beach Step Show and an extended clip of the winning performance by 2010 Long Beach Step Show champion, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Controversy (still) = ca$h?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

In a new millennium, in a new decade, there’s much excitement in the hip-hop world. There’s the return of T.I. and his single “I’m Back”, which has definitely started a friendly comparison to certain other hot MC: Drake and his first official single “Over”.

However, T.I.’s comeback is being sidetracked over “suggestive images” conveyed in his Akoo clothing brand ad. A recent billboard promoting the chart topping artist has recently sparked some controversy in “Brick City”, Newark, New Jersey. Not sure if Newark is speaking in defense of the “Always Turned On” Atlantic City as its so fittingly acclaimed or just sick of “demeaning” images placed in their hoods. Either way, City Council President, Mildred Crump, is not so chipper about the lustful Akoo clothing brand ad.

“I’m so sick of people seeing Newark as a place where they can do whatever they want,” said Crump. “They think they can put it in a black community and nobody is going to say or do anything.”

This ad is not alone in its provocativeness. A recent commercial for Beyonce’s perfume, Heat, shows a quite heated Beyonce as a sex symbol with her favorite colors, red and gold. Yet no one uttered a single word in protest against this one. Is there a double standard in place, for what’s deemed as too “sexy” and “controversial” for advertising? Or is “eye-catching” advertising the point of it all?

Did Tip take it too far? Is Beyonce’s ad much ado about nothing? Hit us with your opinion.
