Cashmere Video Pick: The Roots ‘The Fire’

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Everyone has some sort of fire inside them – that intangible spark, the passion inside your soul, the very inspiration to keep going no matter the obstacles that may stand in your way.

In this new Roots video, Rik Cordero produces a mini-film, a cinematic narrative to accompany “The Fire” as its’ score. Unlike any music video we’ve seen before (perhaps coming closest maybe M.I.A.’s epic “Born Free” video), Rik is definitely doing something different here.

With a full cast of characters set in a fictional post-apocalyptic Europe just after WWII, Rik takes us through a bloody, violent and hopeless march toward the unknown. Ultimately it is the one character, a prisoner whose inner fire truly burns brightly,  survives, and receives what is supposed to represent the key to survival. Cashmere has to admit that we didn’t pick up on all the symbolism the first time around, but after a few watches I can definitely appreciate this ambitious piece of art.

Here’s what Rik had to say about the video: “‘The Fire’ is one of my favorite tracks off HIGO and really feels like something you’d hear in the theater. The line ‘you don’t say good luck, you say don’t give up’ inspired me to create a period piece narrative that stays true to the lyrics while adding another layer to the interpretation.”

Cashmere Kicks: Clerks the Shoes!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

In what was sure to be the highlight (for some) of Comic-Con 2010, Etnies announced that they teamed up with writer/director Kevin Smith to release a collaboration project inspired by the 1994 cult classic film Clerks.

Smith debuted the shoes over the weekend during the four-day convention at a happy hour event thrown at San Diego’s  Sé Hotel. 300 fans were on hand  for the announcement and treated to free beer and some Etnies apparel and shoes courtesy of Smith and the sneaker company.

The shoes, based off of Etnies Jameson 2 line, features the “Clerks” logo on the side heel panel of each shoe and matching Etnies logo on the tongue.  What really makes these shoes a “must-own” for Clerks fans, is black and white still shot of two of Smith’s most iconic characters, Jay & Silent Bob in front of the famous Quick Stop on the left and right footbeds of the shoes.

Comic-Con 2010: First Look at Lando Calrissian “Spin-Off”!

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Comic-Con

The 41st annual Comic-Con kicked off yesterday in San Diego. Running through Sunday, the four-day geek out is the largest comic book convention in the western hemisphere bringing together anime, comic book, sci-fi, and video gaming fans worldwide.

Besides checking out all the scantily clad, sci-fi babes, Comic-Con is where you get that rare Generation One, Megatron (at a decent price) to complete your Transformers collection or expand your wardrobe with one of hundreds of comic themed t-shirts available.  Comic-Con also serves as the place where Hollywood gives  fans a first look at some of  the hottest upcoming films and television shows, like Heroes, LOST, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight. In addition, a number of creative, independent shorts like Grayson and Batman Dead End first gained their cult following here.

With today being Star Wars day at Comic-Con, of course a Star Wars short got leaked. Check out the trailer below  for the “spin-off” movie, Blackstar Warrior. Premiering yesterday at Comic-Con, the movie stars Lando Calrissian from the Star Wars series. Is it real? One can only hope.

And in case you never seen them before, here are the full Grayson and Batman Dead End shorts.

HIP-HOP TAKES OVER NETROOTS NATION

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Starting today through Sunday, the 2010 Netroots Nation will be taking place  at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Yearly, Netroots features panels led by many national and international experts, as well as prominent political, issue and policy-oriented speakers. With representatives from the biggest cultural and political websites in America, Netroots Nation 2010 will be the most concentrated gathering of progressive bloggers to date.

This Friday, July 23rd at 3pm PDT,  Cashmere’s Director of Creative Strategy, Ryan Ford, will join Vibe.com‘s Managing Editor Chloe Hilliard, Bossip.com‘s Senior Editor Janee Bolden and Allhiphop.com’s Co-Founder Chuck Creekmur to discuss ways to engage the urban blogosphere in the civic process. Moderating the panel will be the League of Young Voters Education Fund’s Executive Director Ron ‘Biko’ Baker, a hip-hop journalist turned political activist who helms a national organization with a track record of organizing the civic power of young urban America.

“In 2008, young urban voters turned out in record numbers,” says Biko Baker, who prior to becoming LYVEF’s Executive Director served as The Source’s Political Correspondent. ”But right now we aren’t claiming our power as a generation. We share a lot of problems across our communities and we need to stay engaged with each other, especially online.”

Cashmere Review: Inception

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Christopher Nolan, the director of epic Batman film The Dark Knight, has created another masterpiece with Inception. The psychological, sci-fi action film stars  Leonardo Dicaprio as a thief who possesses the power to enter into the dreams of others. Dom Cobb, played by Dicaprio, can project himself deep into the subconscious of his targets and can glean information that even the best computer hackers can’t get to. In the world of corporate espionage, Cobb is the ultimate weapon.

The long awaited film definitely lives up to the hype and delivers a tremendous thrill ride with dazzling visual effects, intense action sequences, and a story that will keep you thinking about Inception days after you’ve seen it. The cast is brilliantly lead by Leonardo Dicaprio with Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page rounding out the supporting roles.

If you’re still debating whether or not to go see it, check out the trailer below, then head out immediately to see it NOW. And if you have the extra cash to spare, it’s a must-see in IMAX.
