Community, DJs, Events, L.A., event#WeekendRecap – Halloween Celebrations and Attractions of Various Kinds
Monday, October 31st, 2011
“It’s official! I can now say that I’ve been to a true Detroit rap battle thanks to Red Bull EmSee! This past Friday, I got to fly out to the D to experience Red Bull EmSee in its true essence (and work of course). The night was filled with piercing punch lines and lyrical acrobats. In the end, it was Eight Mile-native, Hostyle who took the crown and will now be moving on to the Red Bull EmSee Finals in Atlanta later this year…”
“…Biko from The League of Young Voters even made it out to the event! Here he is with good friend and winner of last year’s Red Bull EmSee series, FowL…”
“…Oh, and this is me in the beautiful sky of Detroit…(regardless of what anyone says about the the city.)”
“This is known as the famous Cardiac Burger from The Bucket in Eagle Rock, CA… 2 1/2-pound beef patties, grilled ham, bacon, mushrooms and onions. I’m willing to bet that this burger has significantly shorten my lifespan. I could’ve finished it, but decided not to.”
“I was pre-partying for Halloween at the “This Shit is Haunted” event with @RealUnclePauly, Far East Movement and The Airplane Boys.”
“The world of light and shadow was brought to life with Cirque du Soliel’s performance of Iris at the Kodak Theater.”
This weekend, I went up to Angeles Point in Elysian Park. The park is right in the middle of the city near the legendary Dodger Stadium but feels like you’re miles away. Sometimes it’s good to gain perspective!
“On Friday I went to the reopened Killer Shrimp over in the Marina after work for a friend’s bday dinner. Killer Shrimp has definitely grown up from the hole in the wall, homely food spot a few blocks over into a sexy, mature restaurant and bar on the water. They used to have three main dishes, wine and soft drinks…now they have those trusted entrees with more. Appetizers like lobster mac & cheese and filet mignon dinners are a few standouts. I went with a trusted dish and got their signature shrimp over rice. To wrap the weekend I went to a pre-Halloween bash at MyStudio on Sunday. I even donned a costume like my cousin (lumberjack w/ mullet) and brother (Kenny Powers) and we all received some interesting reactions. Some extra highlights were seeing NBA stars Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans and Russell Westbrook hanging out as well as Taz Arnold (Sa-Ra, TI$A). At the last minute, Drake stopped by and decided to play some of his music from his forthcoming album for his fans in attendance. He had some good stuff and got a great reaction.”

#FavoritesFriday – Artistic, Nerdy, Stylish, Yummy, and Gangsta
Friday, October 28th, 2011
“Thanks to Hector, the owner of Cafe Vergnano 1882 (@Caffe_Vergnano) for bringing the best Italian espresso to San Diego. This is the first one to open here in the states… Don’t know the name of this drink, it’s not on the menu. But it’s 2 shots of espresso, a touch of cinnamon and topped with Hector’s homemade whip cream (made with confectioners sugar).”

“One of my favorite Korean artists Tasha (aka Yoon Mirae of Drunken Tiger) just launched her new music video directed by Lumpens. The video is part of an ongoing project by the Creators Project by Intel and Vice”
“My favorite web find this week is the site CupcakeIpsum.com! It makes really delicious placeholder text instead of the boring “lorem ipsum” latin. You can make long, medium and short paragraphs and you can choose how many paragraphs you want. Plus, the website is designed very well. Similar to the gangster lorem ipsum site Lorizzle.nl.”
“…And I have another favorite this week! This is an infographic of the evolution of game controllers. It’s just amazing; even if I don’t play video games!”
“Love these Visvim Virgil Folk Boots in suede blue! They’re essential to every great man’s wardrobe this season.”
“My favorite this week is Green Peas’ BBQ Chicken Pizza with vegan cheese, gluten free crust, and real chicken!
”
“I’ve been hearing about this kid Future a lot, lately; especially from the homies in Atlanta. He just released his official video for his growing hit ‘Tony Montana’ minus the Drake verse. But even without the special guest, Future gets it in the Dominican Republic with this visual courtesy of well-known director Jesse Terrero. Gangsta Rap ain’t dead!”
“Thanks to Kosta and Nick Adler, I’m about to put my official Gunnar Call of Duty: MW3 Gaming Eyewear to optimal use this weekend. Did I forget to mention it’s Double XP weekend. AAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW SNAP…IT’S ON!!!!”
#ThrowbackThursday: Michael Jackson – Thriller
Thursday, October 27th, 2011
Halloween is right around the corner and I thought it would be fitting to pay homage to the King of Pop and one of his all-time greatest albums: Thriller. With classics such as “Billy Jean” and “Beat It”, Thriller is Michael Jackson’s single greatest selling album, selling approximately 30 million albums worldwide.
More than the album however, I’m to focusing on a specific song from the album and its music video. The track, of course, is “Thriller”. While the song is stellar in and of itself, the music video is what people today would call EPIC.
Widely known as being one of, if not THE greatest music video of all time, is a 14-minute long masterpiece. It was decades ahead of its time and introduced a new and creative innovations to music video production.
VH1 listed “Thriller” as the “Greatest Video” of all time. MTV titled the music video the “Great Music Video Ever Made.” Time Magazine named it one of “The 30 All-TIME Best Music Videos”. I don’t think much more needs to be said. Enjoy the video below and oh yeah, HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

HP LAUNCHES ARTIST #TALK LISTENING PARTIES
HP has been targeting the music industry and its customers for some time now with their Music Influencer Program and their partnership with Beats Audio. Now they are introducing a new live listening series called “ARTIST #TALK”, which will feature live interviews with artists, hosted by Arjan Timmermans of ArjanWrites.com. The series will focus on the creative process of making music, and how each artist experiences it differently. HP is inviting key tastemakers and social media experts to attend the events, in hopes that they will share the stories with their networks. This is a different approach to marketing, as it does not target a wide audience, but instead reaching out to influential people who will hopefully share the HP love on their own social profiles.
IPOD CREATOR MARKETS NEW SMART THERMOSTAT
Former Apple exec and creator of the iPod is now transforming an everyday item into a product geared for the next generation of technology. Most people don’t think of their thermostat as something cool and smart, but Tony Fadell is changing all that. The “Nest”, which is connected through WiFi to any smartphone, tablet, or computer, is intended to learn your habits and save you money on energy costs. The Nest will learn certain settings that you have for different times of the day, learn when you are home and when you are not, and will cut down on wasted energy use. The $250 price may be too steep for most homeowners, but devices that make life easier and more efficient are the next big thing, just like the iPhone was for the cell phone industry.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO FOLLOWS OTHER CELEBS, INVESTS IN PHOTO-SHARING APP
Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio is joining other celebrities in funding tech start-ups, recently leading a $4 Million round of investments for photo-sharing app Mobli. Mobli is similar to Instagram, creating a series of filters for your cell phone camera, and having the ability to share those photos across different social networks. The difference with Mobli is that the sharing aspect is more centered around your location, as well as different categories. You can add your photos, as well as follow, different categories, like food or art. You can also see what photos people are posting around you according to your current location. With the new location based sharing and 22 new filters, Mobli could be a viable competitor to the dominant Instagram.
WAL-MART WILL NOW SELL MOBILE PAYMENT READER
Square, a small payment device that plugs into smartphones, will now be for sale in all of Wal-Mart’s nationwide locations. The device, which attaches to most iOS and Android devices, allows credit card payments to be processed right there on the spot through the phone. The device will sell for $9.99, which is a huge discount from typical credit card terminals, so they are a big hit for small business owners. The company takes a 2.75% cut, but it could be worth it for those businesses who are small in size or mostly mobile.

#WeekendRecap – Pumpkins, Shrimp, Mishaps, and High Society
Monday, October 24th, 2011
@Mimijakes and @jasminn got in Halloween mood and carved out some amazing Jack-o’-lanterns.
“On Sunday I finally made it over to the Boiling Crab in Koreatown. I’ve known of this restaurant for over a year now and had yet to go. With plans of watching some football and pigging out, I made it over. After a 40min wait I was ready to eat. I ordered a pound of shrimp and a pound of king crab legs. I went with the “Whole Sha-Bang” seasoning, spicy. I’d call myself pretty satisfied seeing that I ate everything that was in those two bags. My stomach was very happy, however my basketball shorts haven’t forgiven me yet for the stains left on them (shrugs).”
- @eazee
“I got locked out of my car at the office on Sunday and @shenANNIEgans and @TheColinPierce came to rescue me. I bought them margaritas and tacos after.”
“Saturday night was one of dichotomy. After checking out new Interscope artist Don Trip and headliner The Game at House of Blues Sunset Strip, we headed over to Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane‘s for a 50/60s themed super party. While partygoers were in outfits from the era, we managed to slip in wearing our gear from the Game concert.”

Welcome back to Cashmere #FavoritesFriday! Each Friday you get a look into what’s currently a favorite amongst the Cashmere team.
“Tribute Video to Steve Jobs, “Steve’s Apple,” I know this is old news but i like this” -@alice_han
We see that Publicist, Alison Kwee, has gotten into the Halloween spirit early this year:
“These guys made my week:)” -@alleykat1110
The self-appointed “television historian,” Anthony Kennedy, brought this gem to our attention this week:
“Easily the best comedy on television today, Community. The third year show is so ahead of the game and blows away anything else on television (I’m looking at you Modern Family and 30 Rock). They’ve already produced classic episodes involving a school-wide game of paintball, a hilariously funny episode involving dungeons and dragons, and last week’s brilliant episode that showed the outcomes from SIX DIFFERENT realities that were created from simply rolling a dice. AWESOME!!!” -@antpooh
Brandon Banks had a new video for us to take a look at:
“Video from my homie from Compton. Seung and Ted know this guy. This may be the craziest video I’ve seen in a minute hip-hop wise. Not sure what any artist like this could work for, but these are the types of videos that get random attention for upcoming artists (think Tyler & Odd Future, etc)” -@eazee
In the meantime, our Senior Publicist Kristen Tambara, found this “adorable baby dressed up for Halloween as Tom Hank’s volleyball friend, “Wilson,” from Cast Away.” -@tambybear
And last, from Ryan Ford:
“When people are posting items on Facebook they usually only think of a handful of people that will look at their page. But with hundreds of friends and millions of their friends online, you never really know who is watching you…and maybe even stalking you. Watch your virtual back!!” -@fordryan
Check back every Friday to find out about our favorite staff stuff of the week!

Apple, Cashmere Crew, Entertainment, FavoritesFriday, Music, Social Media, Technology, TelevisionLabor Secretary Solis Announces Social Jobs Partnership
Thursday, October 20th, 2011
This news story was brought to our attention from courtesy of the Executive Director of the League of Young Voters, Biko Baker. With the economy slowly recovering from the infamous ‘Recession’, Americans are still looking for a way to make ends meet and stay linked. And in the spirit of linking, multiple powerhouses have come together to provide a platform for the unmotivated and unemployed to connect with employers and organizations that are looking to hire or supply useful resources.
The Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis, announced just recently an innovative partnership that leverages the combined audience and expertise of officials from the U.S. Department of Labor, Facebook, the National Association of State Workforce Agencies, Direct Employers Association and the National Association of Colleges and Employers to provide crucial employment resources to job seekers through the use of social networks.
“Linking American job seekers with the resources they need to get back to work is a top priority of the Obama administration and my department,” said Secretary Solis. “By leveraging the power of the social Web, this initiative will provide immediate, meaningful and ready-to-use information for job seekers and employers, and a modern platform to better connect them.”
As part of the announcement, Facebook officials debuted a “social jobs partnership” page that highlights available training programs, educational opportunities and job search resources, which can be accessed at Facebook.com/socialjobs. Facebook also made a commitment to drive traffic to the page through targeted online public service announcements that will appear to users in geographic areas experiencing high unemployment.
In the coming months, public and private-sector partners who have committed to helping Americans find jobs through resources and technology will be added. To view streaming video of the announcement, click here.
