#GreenRoom Mixtape – AVAILABLE NOW

Today, The League of Young Voters Education Fund and Green For All released The Green Room Mixtape hosted by DJ Willie Shakes in honor of Earth Day. The mixtape features music from some of today’s hottest hip-hop and R&B acts including Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, BJ the Chicago Kid and Dee-1. The music featured on The Green Room Mixtape represents communities from across the U.S., and those who download the free mixtape will also receive the Block Rockers Toolkit with resources to help them make their community greener.

Today, the League of Young Voters Education Fund will host “#RebuildTheDream,” a live-streaming discussion on YoungVoterLive.com, with prominent activist and provocateur, Van Jones. The former White House advisor will discuss the resurgence of grassroots activism, the current political landscape and what people can do to rebuild the American dream.

Long before the headlines were dominated by Occupy Wall Street, Van Jones was a fierce advocate for economic justice in America. His new book, “Rebuild the Dream,” hit stores last week. In this hard-hitting new work, he discusses his time inside the White House and lays out a strategic plan to reinvigorate the progressive movement.

The League of Young Voters Education Fund’s 99Problems.org has teamed up with Green 4 All to bring you The Green Room Mixtape hosted by DJ Willie Shakes. The mixtape features some of today’s hottest hip hop and R&B artists, including Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, BJ the Chicago Kid, Dee-1, Rebel Diaz, BRWN BFLO, Green 4 All’s Markese Bryant and many more.

In honor of Earth Day, this mixtape represents the “green room” (i.e. city parks, local grocery stores and livable spaces) needed by communities across the country to survive.

The Green Room Mixtape drops this Wednesday, April 18, at www.99problems.org/thegreenroom. Here’s an exclusive track from the mixtape by New Orleans, LA native, Dee-1 titled “Blue.”

RAP SESSIONS PANEL WITH BAKARI KITWANA TONIGHT AT 7PM ET

This evening, The League of Young Voters Education Fund and Rap Sessions will host a live-streaming panel discussion, “Rebirth of a Nation: The Black Image in the American Mind,” which is a part of the Rap Sessions series, at 7 p.m. ET on YoungVoterLive.com.

From entertainment and politics to the media images that accompany them, the civil-rights era idea of “Blackness” is currently in flux. A panel of leading national experts will explore contemporary moments in popular cultural and politics where race, image and identity have taken center stage. This discussion seeks to help young people look at hip-hop culture as a cross-racial phenomenon that has political and cultural roots in black and brown communities.

Moderated by author-activist and Rap Sessions CEO Bakari Kitwana, the panel includes authors Mark Anthony Neal and Joan Morgan, journalist Elizabeth Mendez Berry, artist-scholar John Jennings and Rob “Biko” Baker, Executive Director of the League of Young Voters Education Fund.

This past Tuesday as you know President Barack Obama had his State of the Union speech.  Before their viewing party The League of Young Voters Education Fund (LYVEF) in partnership with AllHipHop.com and Rock the Vote had an interactive panel to engage young voters.  It was shown live on UStream and allowed young voters to see people like Dee-1, RhymeFest, Chuck Creekmur, Janee Bolden, Andreas Hale, Shaheem Reid, Michale Skolnik and more.  Viewers were able to join in by tweeting questions with #BarackTalk.  It was a great online turnout with over 32,000 viewers and the venue itself in D.C. reaching capacity with people standing outside trying to be a part of this event.  Congrats to all involved that helped make this such a great success.  Make sure to watch the recap video below.

League of Young Voters, FowL Release Generation Next: #UnF_cktheWorld

Today, the League of Young Voters Education Fund (LYVEF) in partnership with Rock the Vote, launch their first installment of their Generation Next: #UnF_cktheWorld mixtape series. Featuring the work of hip-hop’s hottest underground artists, LYVEF will use this series as a way to educate hip-hop fans about civic causes and ramp up each release to have strong voting messages as we get deeper in the 2012 Presidential election cycle.

First on deck is Detroit’s young rapper FowL, the 2010 Red Bull EmSee Champion who was crowned “Best Freestyler in the Nation” by Eminem. The series was created by LYVEF to connect with hip-hop fans about social and political causes as we approach the 2012 presidential election.

Join Hi-Tek & The League Of Young Voters to Talk Hip-Hop & Politics

Today at 4pm EST, the League of Young Voters Education Fund (LYVEF) present “Young Voter Live,” a live chat with innovative Ohio-native, Hip-Hop Artist and Producer Hi-Tek, who is known for his collaborative work with Talib Kweli and their “Reflection Eternal” projects, as well as his instrumentation with “Blackstar.” He will be joining LYVEF in an online event which will be streaming live from the Cincinnati based Hip-Hop youth center, Elementz.

Young people are taking their causes to the streets as they face rampant unemployment and unprecedented attacks on their right to vote. Ohio sets the stage for political movements nationwide – and this is no exception. With Hi-Tek’s participation, this online event is the perfect way to bring the Ohio community together to voice their concerns and encourage them to vote in the local November 8th election.
