#NewTech: New York Times’ Presents the Election 2012 iPhone App

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Straight from our client over at 99Problems.org, they’re keeping the nation abreast of all things election-worthy. And of course, New York Times’ 2012 Election app tops their list.

“In the midst of all this fast talking coming from the President and President hopefuls, you might get lost and even turned off. If you’re like me, you might tune out the tv and then tune back in like WTF is going on. Don’t even trip, for the most relevant coverage of the 2012 Presidential race, we’ve got ya covered. The only catch is, you’ve got to have an iPhone. Yea, I know. I don’t have one either but if we’re lucky, #TeamAndroid & #TeamBlackberry will join in with the #AppleGang.”

SOCIAL MEDIA WEEK RECAP

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Last week in LA was big for anyone involved in the social media world, as the international Social Media Week just wrapped up.  The Cashmere team attended a number of events at various agency hubs around the city, covering topics from fashion and comedy, to analytics and social causes.  We thought we would share some of the great tips we learned over the past five days, so here you go!

Facebook’s Impact on Entertainment PR and Marketing (Alison Kwee – @alleykat1110)

“Speakers from all around the entertainment business shared their tips on marketing through Facebook.  They shared that they found Business-to-Consumer interaction is better done on Facebook, but Business-to-Business interactions are better done on Twitter.  They also explained how Twitter is more meant for listening and hearing breaking news, while Facebook provides a more intimate relationship and conversation with the consumer.  Overall, this panel had some great insight on the tricks and tips of Facebook.”

Social Media: Taking Fashion to New Heights (Theresa Aufner – @destined_2_win & Misty Anderson – @LuvlyIzMe)

“It was very interesting to hear how fashion bloggers, style experts, and retailers use social media and digital marketing to their advantage. Communicating with their online following on a very personal level through social media really has taken the fashion world to new heights and has allowed style lovers all over the world to connect and share their passion.”

Competitive Social Media Monitoring: What Works on Facebook & How to Get in the Newsfeed (Anthony Kennedy – @antpooh)

“I was a bit shocked to learn that while most posts from brand consisted of links, that those received the fewest engagements. What garnered the most? Photo albums’. Additionally, something we’ve always preached at Cashmere, quality fans were more important to secure over the quantity, as while a page like L’oreal Paris Brazil (yeah, I don’t get that page name either) had the highest percentage of user engagement while only maintaining 358K fans.”

Pick Me! The Ins and Outs of Influencer Outreach (Kristen Tambara – @tambybear)

“Annie, Misty and I attended one of the most fruitful conferences called Pick Me! The Ins and Outs of Influencer Outreach.  Throughout the discussion, a panel of experts discussed the best ways to identify influencers by utilizing certain online media tools and assessing attributes, such as reach, relevance and resonance.  Featuring influencer and social media experts, Neal Schaffer (Founder of Windmills Marketing), Matthew Arevalo (Founder of Master Works), Stacy Soleil (Founder of Soleil Marketing Services), Rex Freiberger (Founder of Highly Relevant) and Josh Ochs (Founder of Media Leaders), the five also discussed topics of how to go about conducting influencer outreach properly with tactics that will properly engage them, have effective communication with them, as well as measuring their impact.

When Integrated Marketing Met Social: Love at First Like (James Koo – @jameskoo)

“Mark Wallrapp, Director of National Accounts at Facebook, came and spoke about the increase in time spent on social media and how that should tailor strategy. Yes, I have his email address. Yes, I will be emailing him for tech support. Some interesting things: Time spent on Portals decreased by 20% in the past year, time spent on Search has plateaued, and time spent on Social has increase by 50%.  He also talked about how we don’t hind behind screennames and avatars anymore, and that our presence online is often a genuine extension of ourselves. Now that we get a lot of our news from friends, Facebook is making social/viral news easier, by allowing people to get a better feel for what content they share has become “social” through their friends.”

GOOGLE BUYS MOTOROLA, HP PUTS WebOS ON HOLD

Google shook up the smartphone world this week by spending $12.5 billion to acquire Motorola, which further solidifies Google’s plan to enter the world of hardware.  In the smartphone industry, Google is known for its Android platform that is used by different phone manufacturers including HTC, Samsung, and LG.  Now with the pick up of Motorola, these other Android users are a little worried that Google will be creating an upgraded Android platform that will only work on their Motorola phones.  On the other hand, Apple isn’t too worried because they just got a confidence boost this week in the tablet game.  HP, makers of the TouchPad tablet, have discontinued production of the device, and put their operating system on hold.  WedOS, which they planned to use for many different devices, is currently on hold and HP says they are not sure what to do with it yet.

40% OF YOUTUBE USERS WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS

YouTube has recently reached out to metrics company comScore to report data on their partner channels.  They released some early info to Ad Age about the videos being watched.  With Vevo and Warner Music holding a big percentage of the views, they reported that 40% of users watch music videos while on the site.  38% watch videos on Vevo, and 20% watch Warner Music videos.  This also does not include music videos with fans dancing in their rooms or playing live shows, which makes the amount of music being watched an even more integral part of our YouTube experience.

BING LAUNCHES “WE”RE IN” APP TO PLAN EVENTS AND SHARE LOCATIONS

The search engine giant Bing has created an easier way to organize groups and build hangouts.  Unlike Foursquare, the goal isn’t to broadcast your location to the world, but more to reach out to friends about specific events and locations.  With more of a social network aspect to it, critics are calling “We’re In” the other half of Foursquare.  Users can create events with full details, and then invite friends via their contact info.  Friends will get a text with invite, and then be able to respond with their availability.  The app is currently exclusive for Windows Phone users.

Cashmere Agency at the White House For The First Twitter Townhall

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Twitter.com and President Barack Obama partner for the first Presidential townhall on the social media platform. Twitter.com receives 148,742,825 monthly visits and has an estimated 200 million users tweeting well over 200 million messages daily. Obama and his team are revving up campaign efforts for the 2012 Presidential Election, and are using this powerful tool to engage young voters and recapture their support heading into 2012.

President Obama would like to focus the conversation on the economy and jobs but Twitter will choose the questions based on the themes and popular topics they see among the submitted questions.  So far thousands of questions have poured into the #AskObama hashtag ranging from unemployment and the deficit, to Afghanistan and Libya and the legalization of marijuana.

What will you ask President Barack Obama? Tune in to the live webcast at 11am PST (2pm EST) via askobama.twitter.com and submit your question NOW for a live response by the President using either @TalktoBarack or #AskObama hashtags.

The League of Young Voters Education Fund will also be present, along with Cashmere Agency, with their “Twitter mob” in full force. To band together with like minds and make an impact tomorrow, join efforts with the League by becoming a part of the #TalktoBarack Mob to amplify your voice and get your questions answered.

Planking Goes Viral

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Does it get anymore ridiculous or dangerous than this? Planking, the act of lying down in horizontal corpse-style positions, which was brought to life in 2006, is back with a mean twist: Social Media.

People are submitting and sharing photos of themselves posing onto preferred sites such as Facebook, Twitter & YouTube. The more public, the better. The larger the group, the better. No location is out of bound when playing this game.

Unfortunately, some people are taking extreme risks to stand out and have died in the process. Could that be the attraction? Social Media’s most dangerous game has went viral and may have some of your favorite celebs putting there arms up and laying down like its a robbery!

Cashmere's Visual Production Department team member Ashten Planks

Check their posted pictures below of Slim Thug, Flavor Flav, and even Justin Bieber getting in on the planking phenomenon!

Digital Push for the Presidency

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Already, social media is dominating the upcoming 2012 race to the White House. Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts, announced his candidacy with a 150-second YouTube video, blasting President Obama for failing to “know how jobs are created in the private sector.”

Romney’s video comes one week after Obama launched his own campaign initiative via YouTube, to which Romney fired back on Twitter with “@barackobama I look forward to hearing details on your jobs plan, as are 14m unemployed Americans.”

Without a doubt, social media will play a much larger role in the 2012 Presidential race than it did in the 2008 race, when President Obama led a revolutionary campaign utilizing Facebook and Twitter, while John McCain fell behind using his more conventional operation.

Currently, Romney has 840,000 Facebook fans and more than 33,000 Twitter followers, but that’s peanuts compared to Obama’s 7.3 million Twitter count and 19 million Facebook fans.

Time to play catch up, Romney.

AOL TO BUY HUFFINGTON POST FOR $315 MILLION

In a bid to make itself relevant again, struggling Internet pioneer AOL Inc. announced late Sunday that it would buy the Huffington Post, the well-known news and opinion site, for $315 million in cash and stock.

As part of the deal, Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington will oversee a new group responsible for bringing together all editorial content from both companies including news, technology, music and local media websites.

The deal, which was signed Sunday with approval from the boards of both companies, is something of a gamble for AOL, which is looking to reignite growth in advertising revenue.

SKYGRID UNLEASHES SOCIAL MESSAGING AND AGGREGATION PLATFORM FOR BRANDS, GROUPS AND CELEBRITIES

SkyGrid, a startup that offers a powerful business news aggregator, is deviating slightly from the content model into social today. SkyGrid is launching Groups, a social messaging platform that connects conversations people are having all over the web – on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and others, by topic or ‘group.’

SkyGrid Groups are pipelines of real-time, public information about a topic, sourced from news sites, Twitter, Facebook, brands and more. Using SkyGrid’s patented “stream-browsing” technology, Groups will aggregate mentions, photos, news, videos and more from hundreds of services. A group’s creator can filter which videos, Tweets, status updates, or other content they want to include in the group. Users can join groups to follow the real-time conversation around certain topics (but have to be approved by the Group’s creator).

MARKETERS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT FINDING SOCIAL MEDIA ROI

Marketers are hopeful that this will be the year that they finally link social media marketing to ROI, a new survey says.

According to the report from Bazaarvoice, 74% of CMOs predict they will finally tie social efforts to hard ROI this year. The survey polled 175 CMOs from The CMO Club, including those from B2C and B2B companies in various industries.

In 2009, 84% of companies did not measure social media ROI — in 2011, that’s not an option. Business decisions are best made when they are based on hard numbers that measure success, and social media efforts are no longer an exception.
